Drugstore
were born in 1992 when Isabel Monteiro and American drummer Mike
Chylinski met via a flatshare. They began writing material and
slowly piecing together a band. In May 1993 the band pressed 500
copies of their debut single, 'Alive' on their own Honey label.
Not only did 'Alive' sell out, but it was awarded Melody Maker's
Single Of The Week. It was at this point that Drugstore signed
a publishing deal with Complete Music and were joined by guitarist
Daron Robinson. It was now that the band started to move onto
bigger and better things - a limited edition single 'Modern Pleasure'
through Rough Trade's Singles Club and shows with The Smashing
Pumpkins, Lemonheads, Echobelly and the Tindersticks.
In
March 1994 Drugstore signed to Go! Discs and released two singles
'Starcrossed' and 'Solitary Party Groover' that increased their
growing fan base and turned them into real critics favourites.
In early 1995 the band released 'Nectarine' as a taster for the
bands full length debut album 'Drugstore' which was to follow
in March to glowing critical reviews.
1995
also saw Drugstore spending much of their time on the road in
Europe and America and the release of 'Fader' in May. 'Drugstore'
the album went on to win the hearts of many of the fans throughout
the world and resulted in many festival appearances, which the
band took up throughout 1996. In November 1996 a brand new single
was released called 'Mondo Cane'.
Another
hit with critics and fans alike, 'Mondo Cane' heralded the arrival
of the first new Drugstore material for some time. The band with
the addition of Ian Burdge on Cello continued to write their eagerly
awaited second album in the early part of 1997, but before it
could be released, Drugstore's label Go! Discs famously hit problems
with it's parent Polygram and Drugstore were released from their
contract with a dazzling album but no label to release it.
After
months of negotiations Drugstore finally signed to RoadRunner
Records and released 'White Magic For Lovers' in May 1998 which
included the UK top 20 single 'El President' featuring a fantastic
duet with Isabel and Thom Yorke (from Radiohead). The album also
featured the tracks 'Say Hello' and 'Sober'.
Throughout
1999 Drugstore kept up a string of appearances at festivals throughout
the world, while the band took stock of their position. Without
a label after Roadrunner decided to concentrate on its core audience
of heavy metal, Drugstore were once again free to choose their
own destiny. Isabel kept writing songs in preparation for the
band's third album while the other band members pursued their
own musical agendas.
Finally,
after a bidding war between interested labels Drugstore decided
to sign with another independent, in the form of Global Warming
Records. The deal was inked in March and the band headed straight
into the studio and recorded their new album "Songs For The
Jetset" in just ten days. The resulting work is their best
yet - full of hope and love, loss and sorrow, pain and beauty
in equal measures, all sprinkled with that indefinable Drugstore
magic.
"Songs
For The Jetset" was released in January 2001, and contained
the singles "I Wanna Love You Like A Man", "Song
For The Lonely" and "Baby, Don't Hurt Yourself".
The latter features Lambchop's Paul J. Niehaus as a special guest,
after an evening's carousing he was dragged down to the studio
and played the beautiful pedal steel guitar that weaves its way
through the track.
Part
of no scene but a world entirely of their own making, Drugstore
have a vital new sound to offer. Sink into the star-drenched beauty
of their midnight melancholia and discover it for yourself.
