Jylt
Once upon a time Sarah and Nia discovered they lived in the same
street. For many years, playing with dolls after school was enough
to keep their imaginations occupied. However, by the time they
had begun senior school the girls realised (with horror) that
they were too old for dolls and began to channel their creative
energies into music. It started with just songs around the piano,
then to performances in school. Friends joined then left, At age
12 Sarah and Nia 'spotted' Alex in music class and promptly approached
him. It wasn't long before Alex suggested his long-time jamming
partner, Tim, as drummer. Jylt were born.
Or
should we say Narcisse (flowery and cute?), Martha's Leg (after
the meat on the spit in the local kebab shop!), and Epik (just
so that they could say "and we were Epik" at the end
of their set!). Eventually, after these and numerous other name
changes, Jylt really were born.
Gigging
and gigging Jylt's reputation grew on the local scene. Student123
then gave the band their first opportunity for national exposure.
Jylt were voted and hailed as the top unsigned act on the Student123.com
CD, which went out to over 100,000 students across the UK. A parallel
promotional tour of UK universities followed, sponsored by Student123
themselves. A hefty new fanbase developed and with monies generated
from the tour the band went into the studio. The result, single
"Anon" gave the band their first taste of national radio,
Lamacq picked up the Jylt baton from his Session in Wales colleagues
and tipped the band as Wales's new 'rock talent'. At the same
time, and with all this activity, Jylt were named BURBs Artist
of the Month.
Meanwhile,
Uglyman Music had been keeping a close eye on things down in South
Wales. Just prior to the band performing at Glastonbury, the Leeds
based music company stepped in to make the band an offer, which
they duly accepted. Glastonbury was a memorable gig for the band
we're sure that Jylt were the only band to play a total of seven
gigs @ this year's festival! Post summer, some form of Autumn
calm (in the form of studio time) came into place and the band
began working with the talent of Tim Wills, (Ian Brown, The Frames).
The 3 track single "Surrender" is released on Monday
17th March 2003 on Uglyman Music.
