STEPHEN
WATSON (b. 1955)
Born
in Chester, Stephen Watson's musical training began with violin
lessons. The trumpet was also an abiding passion at this time.
His musical abilities were recognised at the City Grammar School
and his training continued at university where he gained considerable
experience as an Orchestral violinist as well as singing with
and conducting Choral societies in the north of England. In recent
times his interest has turned towards orchestra and brass band
music. In 1982 he was commissioned to write a regimental march
for the Royal Corps of Signals which was later arranged for brass
band. This commission brought together both the musical and military
sides of his interests.
The
first large-scale Orchestral piece he wrote was the SYMPHONIC
STUDY, which looks back with new eyes to an earlier tradition.
In this, showing a mastery of Orchestral writing and sonata form,
Watson achieves large contrasts in colour and texture and exhibits
a dynamism which is impossible to ignore.
